Industrial IoT Telemetry: ESP32 Microcontrollers, MQTT Pipelines & Home Assistant
Deploying custom ESP32 microcontroller nodes with hydrostatic and environmental sensors into a local-first Home Assistant event loop for automated environmental control.
Commercial off-the-shelf smart home sensors often rely on proprietary cloud APIs with high latency, frequent outages, and data lock-in. For mission-critical environments—such as agricultural micro-climate control or server rack environmental monitoring—local-first hardware telemetry is required.
1. Hardware Architecture & Sensor Interfacing
Using dual-core ESP32 microcontrollers flashed with ESPHome or custom C++ firmware, we interface I2C temperature/humidity sensors (SHT40) and analog hydrostatic pressure probes with calibrated voltage dividers to measure liquid levels and atmospheric thresholds with high precision.
2. Lightweight MQTT Streaming & QoS Buffering
Data payloads are published over a local Mosquitto MQTT broker using QoS 1 guarantees. If an individual wireless node experiences brief RF degradation, onboard circular buffers retain sensor readings until the TCP handshake re-establishes.
3. Closed-Loop Automation & Emergency Failover
Home Assistant processes incoming telemetry through discrete state machines. If high-heat or moisture anomalies are detected, automated relays trip localized extraction fans and trigger priority alerts via encrypted push notifications.
